We’re a fifteen minute drive up Redwood Road from the Napa Valley floor, and that climb changes a few things about visiting us: the weather, the shoes you’ll want, and how much time to leave between reservations. How is a Mount Veeder winery different from a valley floor winery?
Mount Veeder sits in the Mayacamas range on the western edge of Napa Valley, and our estate vineyards climb well above the valley floor. That elevation changes three things.
The growing conditions. We sit above the fog line, so our mornings are clearer and our days are cooler than Oakville or Rutherford, while our nights stay warmer. The soils here are shallow, volcanic and well-drained rather than deep alluvial valley soil. Vines struggle a little, yields run low, and the fruit hangs longer into the fall.
The wines. Smaller berries mean more skin relative to juice, which gives Mount Veeder Cabernet firmer tannins, darker fruit and more structure than a typical valley floor Cabernet. These are wines built for the cellar. If you have tasted your way down Highway 29, a Mount Veeder tasting will read as noticeably more savory and structured.
Your visit. The drive up Redwood Road is winding and takes about fifteen minutes from the valley floor, so leave more time between appointments than the mileage suggests. It is usually several degrees cooler here, and the weather shifts faster. Bring a layer and shoes you can walk in. In exchange you get vineyard views from high above the valley and a property that feels considerably more remote than its distance from town.
What days and hours are you open?
Thursday through Monday, 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. We are closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Last service is at 3:00 pm, so book by mid-afternoon if you want the full experience.
How much does a wine tasting cost?
Tasting experiences range from $40 to $250 per person. See all tasting experiences for details and availability.
How long does a visit take?
Plan on 90 minutes for most tasting experiences, including our Estate Tasting. The ATV Vineyard Tour & Tasting runs 90 to 120 minutes, and the Collectors Club Tasting takes about 60 minutes. Because the drive up Redwood Road takes about fifteen minutes from the valley floor, we suggest leaving extra time before your next reservation.
What should I wear for a wine tasting?
Dress in layers and comfortable shoes. It’s usually several degrees cooler here than on the valley floor, and the weather can change quickly. You’ll be walking through our gardens and the Hess Art Collection, so skip heels. We also suggest avoiding white fabrics, since wine stains set in fast.
Do I need a reservation?
Reservations are recommended for all experiences and can be booked online. Walk-in space is sometimes available, so call or text our Concierge at 707.255.1144 to check.
What should I do if it looks like my preferred date and time are fully booked?
If we’re fully booked, please call or text our Concierge and we’ll be happy to see if we can fit you in. If we can’t, due to staffing or private event, we’ll do our best to find another time that works for you.
Do you have a group size limit?
We typically accommodate groups of 4-6, but we’re happy to host larger groups. Please reach out to our Concierge in advance so we can get you on the books.
Can you accommodate a guest who doesn’t drink?
Of course we can. If, for any reason, an N/A guest will be on your reservation, please reach out to the Concierge. You’ll be issued a $10 refund to cover the cost of the wine.
Can you accommodate food allergies?
Often, we can. We want you to be comfortable here. Please inform us of any dietary allergies at the time of making your reservation. Every effort will be made to accommodate dietary restrictions, but please note that last-minute changes may not be possible.
Can I bring my dog to the winery?
At this time, we can only permit trained service dogs.
Can I bring my children to the winery?
You’re welcome to visit with children for complimentary Museum Access, but at this time our tastings and experiences are 21+ only. Currently, our galleries are in the midst of an exciting refresh. Access to the museum will be closed through the end of the year, and we thank you for your patience as the new exhibition comes together.
Can I bring outside food or drink?
For many reasons, we cannot permit outside food or drinks. Unopened bottles of wine you’ve purchased during other tastings can, of course, be carried in.
Is the ATV tour available year-round?
Yes, conditions permitting. Mount Veeder weather can close the route, and our concierge will contact you if conditions require rescheduling.

4411 Redwood Road, Napa, CA 94558, about a fifteen minute drive up Redwood Road from the Napa Valley floor. The road is winding and climbs into the Mayacamas, so allow a little more time than the mileage suggests.
How early should I arrive?
Please arrive no earlier than ten minutes before your reservation so we can seat your group properly.
Can I visit the Hess Art Collection without a prior reservation?
We do offer Museum Access at no cost, though we do request prior reservations. However, we may have room for walk-ins. Please reach out to our Concierge, day-of, and we’ll do our best to fit you in.
Do I have to make a wine tasting reservation to see the Hess Art Collection?
Not at all. Donald Hess intended his art collection to be accessible. We offer Museum Access at no cost, though we do ask that your reserve this ahead of time.
